there are many ways psychic receive information. Spirit guides, meditation, dreams, etc... Names won't be given because psychics work with the energy of the person, not names. Names are not important as the body is just a shell.

I've never had to use imagery to connect to the spirit world. Visualizations I use to express my requests, after all if you can't visiualize it, how will what you want be known.
Being "blocked" can mean a few differing things. You could have a physical or emotional issue that is causing problems for you. I would review these, to find if there is something that you should be doing for yourself, to ease the energy flow.
Also you could be having a slow period of need. Spirits are about during times of great need and they serve many. Your needs may be the lesser of those served and thus, lesser priority.
It is also possible that you have taken a gift or talent for granted. Greetings of spirits, requests, giving gratitude are all part of working with the spirits and if at some point you have not released them to go and do their works, bid them leave, it is possible that there is a reluctance to come at your bidding.
If your concentration has ebbed away and the energy that you are sending out is lacking in intent, this could also explain why you would be less likely to connect. It takes a good deal of concentration to direct energies and even more to recieve them. Concentration on the objective is essential and there are exercises that can help you sharpen those concentration capabilities.
At any rate, fretting about a lack of connection will only make it worse. And beware not to broadcast your fretting, it only serves to intensify the problem.

I am speaking from a spiritual perspective, not necessarily a psychic one. I know how you feel because I have had the same situation in my life with a person. I usually put a blue energy ball/field around myself or my house, or my car. I've also used "psychic bracelets" when working directly with people...etc. I'm curious to hear more interesting methods.
Lets see... I do white light visualizations, sage regularly, keep camphor in water in my bedroom (really good for repelling negativity), salt around the perimeter of my yard, and state the intention that no negativity will enter my space. (Only love can enter and leave). I am an empath, so I have to keep the old shields up constantly. I have clear quartz crystals throughout my home to absorb any negativity, as well.
I regularly take salt baths or showers. They are great for general cleansing and for removing any psychic gunk. Jeez...there are a different million ways....

I think that we all have that ability to a point. Some are just more empathic, and some are just smarter than the average person. People with higher IQ levels have the ability to process and understand information a lot faster than the average person. And a huge amount is based on body and facial language. It could simply be that you are more intelligent in general, or in the regard with reading body language and the slights of facial expressions. They never lie, you can always tell somebodies true motivations by what their body tells you.

I went to a psychic and she said i had an indian spirit around me. She also said that i'm very connected to the earth and that I can harvest things that i want, and I need to be careful what i've been harvesting lately. Indians are known by definition as "in God" that is what Christopher Columbus named them. They are like Jacob/Israel without hair and handle the spritual kingdom. Your spirit guide is a guardian angel sent by God to help you with your destiny, heal and protect. Be thankfyl for him/her. But remember worship and thank God, not the angels.
I am not sure about past lives, I've been doing some research on it and finding it to prove or atleast in close theory to have some validity.
